Data Erasure Software Pricing: What You Really Pay per Drive

Data erasure software is sold per drive, per slot, per site, by subscription or as hardware. What each model really costs, the hidden extras, and reCore's prices.

Cover: two receipts. A typical erasure stack itemizes per-drive licenses, a separate diagnostics license, a console subscription, a network boot server and an appliance. reCore's receipt includes diagnostics, wipe, grading, certificates and remote wipe in one price per operation.

You asked a vendor for a price and got "contact sales." You're not alone. Data erasure software is one of the hardest things in IT to price up, because almost every tool is sold differently, and the number on the quote is rarely the whole bill.

Here's how erasure software is actually priced, the costs that hide around the license, and exactly what reCore charges, in public.

The short version
  • Erasure software is sold five ways: per drive, per slot or site, organization-wide, by subscription with a console, or as hardware.
  • The license is often not the whole bill: diagnostics, consoles, network boot servers and appliances are frequently priced separately.
  • reCore charges one operation per drive wiped and one per device tested and graded, from $0.99 down to $0.05 each at contract volume. Remote wipe, diagnostics, grading and certificates are included.
  • If you only wipe, at one site, in huge volume, an unlimited site license can be cheaper. We'll show you where.

1. The five ways erasure software is priced

ModelHow you payWhat we found publishedWatch for
Per driveOne license consumed per drive erased, bought in packsOne vendor: "One license is consumed for erasing one hard drive"Diagnostics sold as a separate product, with its own license per device
Per slotOne license per drive bay you can erase in parallelOne vendor's industrial software: "From $40 per slot"Per-slot cost multiplies with every bay you add
Site or organization licenseFlat fee, unlimited erasuresOne vendor's list: site license (one physical location) $1,999 to $3,999; enterprise (organization-wide) $3,999 to $5,999"One physical location" means a second site is a second license
Subscription with a consoleAnnual subscription, often per asset, plus a management consoleQuote-only at the vendors we checkedThe console that enables remote control is often its own line item
HardwareBuy an erasure applianceOne vendor: desktops "from $2,900", systems "from $3,500", "no additional cost per drive erased"Hardware ships to you, sits in one place, and ages

None of these is wrong. They suit different floors. The trouble starts when you compare them on the license price alone.

2. The costs that hide around the license

Before you compare two quotes, check whether each one includes these:

  1. Diagnostics and testing. Some vendors sell hardware diagnostics as a separate product, licensed per device.
  2. Grading. Often a different tool altogether, or a spreadsheet and a person.
  3. Remote control. Starting wipes from a central screen can need a management console license, a network edition, or a private cloud "at an extra cost."
  4. Network boot. Booting machines over the network usually means a server you build and maintain: one vendor's guide asks for a server with at least 16 GB of RAM running Windows Server, plus Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, WDS and IIS. We wrote about running a wipe floor without a server room.
  5. Hardware. Appliances and boot media that have to be bought, shipped and replaced.
  6. Failed wipes. Does a wipe that fails still use a license? Is the retry another license?
  7. More sites. Is a site license tied to one address?
  8. Certificates. Are per-drive certificates included, or an extra report?

Add those up and the cheapest-looking license is often not the cheapest floor.

3. What reCore costs, in public

reCore has one unit: the operation.

  • One operation per unique device covers diagnostics, stress testing and grading.
  • One operation per unique drive wiped covers the wipe, its verification and its certificate.
  • Reconnecting the same device or re-wiping the same drive is free for 30 days after its charge.
  • A drive whose wipe fails verification is still billed once, because the work and its record happened. Retrying it is free. A wipe that never finishes isn't billed at all.
PlanMonthlyOperations includedEach extra operationCost per operation at full use
Starter$99100$1.25$0.99
Growth$249500$0.75$0.50
Scale$4991,500$0.50$0.33
Pro ITAD$9995,000$0.30$0.20
Enterprise$2,00020,000$0.10$0.10

Annual billing costs ten times the monthly price, so two months are free. Larger volumes are on contract, at rates as low as $0.05 per operation.

Every plan includes: diagnostics and stress tests, data wiping with a method chosen per drive and checked afterwards, grading, per-drive certificates approved by a second person, the live dashboard, and remote data wipe. There's no console license, no server and no hardware to buy. You download the reCore OS and write it to any USB stick.

The trial: 14 days, 10 operations, no credit card. See pricing.

4. Worked examples

A laptop that is tested, graded and wiped uses two operations: one for the device and one for its drive. Each example below is sized so the plan is used in full.

Your floorPlanMonthly costPer operationPer laptop (2 operations)
250 laptops a monthGrowth$249$0.50$1.00
750 laptops a monthScale$499$0.33$0.67
2,500 laptops a monthPro ITAD$999$0.20$0.40
10,000 laptops a monthEnterprise$2,000$0.10$0.20
50,000+ laptops a monthEnterprise contractQuotedas low as $0.05as low as $0.10

Between those sizes you pay the plan plus extra operations at its overage rate. For example, 1,000 laptops a month (2,000 operations) on Scale is $499 + 500 × $0.50 = $749, which is about $0.37 an operation.

Wiping loose drives through one machine? The machine is billed once, then it's one operation per drive: 500 drives a month on Growth is about $0.50 a drive.

5. When another model is cheaper

We'd rather you buy the right thing than the wrong one from us.

  • One site, wipe only, very high volume. An unlimited site license is a flat fee. Wipe enough drives at one address and nothing else, and it can cost less per drive than any per-operation price.
  • A floor that can never go online. Wipes in reCore finish offline and sync later, but stations do need to connect at some point. If yours never can, talk to us before you buy.

reCore is the better fit when your floor does more than wipe (testing, grading, certificates) or runs more than one site, and when you want remote wipe without buying a console, a server or an appliance.

6. Seven questions to ask any vendor about price

  1. What is the unit: per drive, per device, per slot, per site or per year?
  2. Are diagnostics, grading and certificates included, or separate products?
  3. What does remote wiping need: a console license, a network edition, a server or hardware?
  4. Does a failed wipe use a license, and does the retry use another?
  5. If I open a second site, what changes?
  6. What has to be shipped to us, and what happens when it breaks?
  7. Can I see the price without talking to sales?

Conclusion

The cheapest erasure license and the cheapest erasure floor are rarely the same thing. Count the diagnostics, the console, the server, the hardware and the second site, then compare. Our prices are on the pricing page, and the trial needs no card.

Frequently asked questions

How much does data erasure software cost?

It depends on how it's sold. Some tools charge one license per drive erased, bought in packs. Others sell per-slot, per-site or organization-wide licenses (one vendor's published list runs from $40 per slot to $5,999 for unlimited organizational use). Some are quote-only subscriptions with a separate management console, and bulk erasure hardware starts around $2,900 for a desktop unit. reCore charges per operation: from $0.99 on the smallest plan down to $0.10 on Enterprise, and as low as $0.05 on contract volumes.

What does reCore cost per drive?

One operation per unique drive wiped, plus one per unique device for diagnostics, testing and grading. Plans run from $99 a month for 100 operations to $2,000 a month for 20,000, with overage from $1.25 down to $0.10 per operation. Contract volumes go as low as $0.05 per operation. Re-wiping the same drive and reconnecting the same device are free for 30 days after the charge.

Is remote wipe extra in reCore?

No. Remote wipe is included in every plan. A wipe started from the dashboard costs the same operation as one started at the machine.

Are diagnostics and grading included?

Yes. Diagnostics, stress testing, grading and certificates are covered by the one operation per device. There's no separate diagnostics license.

When is another pricing model cheaper than reCore?

If you only wipe, at one site, at very high volume, an unlimited site or enterprise license can cost less per drive. reCore is built for floors that also test, grade and certify, or that run several sites and want remote wipe without extra infrastructure.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. 14 days with 10 operations included, and no credit card required.
