Why IEEE 2883-2022 Was Created

For decades, data erasure standards assumed spinning magnetic platters where overwriting sectors sequentially guaranteed data destruction. Solid-state technology (NAND flash) completely invalidated this assumption due to the Flash Translation Layer (FTL), dynamic wear leveling, and over-provisioned reserve blocks.

Sanitization Methods Under IEEE 2883
Logical addressable space
Overwrites all user-accessible logical block addresses (LBAs) with a fixed data pattern. Suitable for devices remaining within the same administrative control boundary.
All physical media & controller state
Executes controller-level Block Erase or ATA Secure Erase to reset all electrical flash memory cells, including reallocated blocks, over-provisioning zones, and wear-leveling reserves.
Self-Encrypting Media (SED)
Destroys the Media Encryption Key (MEK) stored in hardware security elements. Because ciphertext becomes mathematically unrecoverable, sanitization completes instantaneously without flash wear.
