Processing a device
What a technician does at the bench, from booting a device to its finished report. The steps you see come from your workflow, so some may be missing or in a different place. The step bar at the top of the station always shows the next one.
In short
The short version
- 1Boot the device from the reCore USB stick and sign in.
- 2Click Start session (
Ctrl+N). - 3Follow the button in the step bar: run diagnostics, the stress test, the manual tests.
- 4Wipe the drives on the Wipe screen, then grade the device.
- 5Click Finish device (
Ctrl+Q). The device gets its outcome and label, and the results go to the server. - 6Offline? Results wait on the stick and sync when the station is back online.
Before you start
- You need a working reCore USB stick. If you don't have one, follow Set up a station first.
- The stick runs reCore on the device you are processing. So each device is booted from the stick, processed, then switched off before the next one.
- Which steps you see depends on your organisation's workflow. See Workflows.
1. Start a session
- 1Boot the device from the stick (how). Sign in with your username and 4-digit PIN if the station asks.
- 2The screen says Ready for the next device. Click Start session, or press
Ctrl+N. - 3A bar appears with the device's make, model, asset tag and serial number. Check it matches the unit in front of you.
The step bar at the top shows your workflow's name, where it came from (for example From the batch), each step, and one button for the next step. Clicking that button is the easiest way through.
Storage Read-Only
If this message shows, the stick can't save anything and you can't start a session. See the troubleshooting table in Set up a station.
2. Automated diagnostics
The station tests the hardware by itself.
- 1Click Run diagnostics in the step bar or in the Automated Diagnostics panel, or press
Ctrl+Space. - 2Each test gets a card that fills in as it finishes: processor, memory, drives, battery, ports, network and more.
- 3Wait for the run to end. You can start the manual tests at the same time if your workflow does them alongside.
- The station leaves out tests a machine can't have. On a server there is no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio or camera test, and the battery card shows the power supplies.
- Stop ends a run early. Tests that hadn't finished are marked incomplete. Results already recorded are kept.
- Running diagnostics again replaces this session's earlier results. The station asks first.
- A red box saying This device is locked to its previous owner. A wipe does not remove this. means the device needs unlocking before resale. The box says what was found and how to fix it.
3. Stress test
If your workflow has one.
Click Start stress test. It puts parts of the device (processor, memory, drives) under heavy load, one after another, to find parts that fail when hot or busy. Which parts and the total time come from the workflow, and the panel shows how the time is split. While it runs you can do the manual tests.
4. Manual tests
The checks only a person can do.
The Manual tests panel lists the tests this device needs, in three groups:
| Group | Test | What you check |
|---|---|---|
| Screen and input | Display | Dead pixels, marks and colour |
| Screen and input | Keyboard | Every key works |
| Screen and input | Trackpad | Cursor, clicks and gestures |
| Camera and sound | Camera | The webcam shows a picture |
| Camera and sound | Sound and mic | Speakers and microphone |
| Ports | Ports | USB, video and other ports |
- 1Click Run all (
Ctrl+Enter) to go through every test in a row. Or use Run group, or Start on one test. - 2Follow the screen for each test and mark it passed or failed.
- 3To stop the sequence, click Stop (
Ctrl+X). Results so far are kept, and the button becomes Run the rest. - 4Got it wrong? Click Retest on that test.
Can't do a test? Click Skip and pick a reason: Part not present, Part damaged, cannot be tested, Customer asked not to test or Station could not test it. The reason is recorded. "Part damaged, cannot be tested" counts as a failure.
Tests a kind of machine doesn't get (by default a desktop gets only Ports) don't show as to-do. The panel lists them as not on this type of device.
What test results mean
Every test ends in one of five states. The dashboard shows them on the device page.
| State | Means | Counts in grades and pass rates |
|---|---|---|
| Passed | The part works. | Yes |
| Warning | It works, with something to note, like a battery below the workflow's minimum health. | Yes |
| Failed | The part is faulty, damaged or missing. | Yes |
| Not applicable | The device doesn't have this part, like a trackpad on a desktop. | Never |
| Not tested | No verdict: the test couldn't run or timed out, the technician skipped it, or the station couldn't test it. | Never |
The difference matters. A test that crashed is Not tested, not Failed, so a station problem never counts as a broken part.
5. Wipe the drives
- 1Click Wipe drives in the step bar, or Data wipe in the sidebar.
- 2Under Select Drives, tick the drives to erase. The drive reCore started from is never in the list.
- 3Check the Wipe Method.
- 4Click Start wipe. The confirmation lists each drive's model, size and serial number. Check them, then confirm.
- 5Don't disconnect drives or switch the device off until the wipe ends. Progress also shows at the bottom of other screens.
Diagnostics and a wipe never run at the same time. How reCore picks a method and checks each wipe is in Data wiping.
6. Grade the device
Click Grade the device. The grading screen asks about the device's condition and gives it a grade. Details are in Grading.
7. Finish the device
- 1Click Finish device, or press
Ctrl+Q. If it is greyed out, hover it: it says what is Still to do. - 2Confirm Finish this device?. You can't add results to the device afterwards.
- 3The station decides the device's outcome (ready, repair, hold and so on) using your workflow's quality gates, prints the workflow's labels, and sends the results.
- 4The Device finished screen shows the device's code and outcome. If the workflow asks, scan the printed label.
- 5Wait a moment so the stick can save, then switch the device off and boot the next one from the stick.
A failed step doesn't stop you finishing. The outcome records where the device goes. See When a step fails.
Submit report, under the test panels, sends this session's results to the server without finishing the device. Use it when you want results to reach the dashboard before you are done.
Automatic workflows
If your workflow runs automatically, the station starts working as soon as you sign in. A banner says Running automatically.
- The station's buttons are greyed out while it runs. Press Stop in the banner to take over.
- When it reaches the manual tests or grading, it opens them and waits for you.
- When everything is done it shows This PC is done.
- If the workflow shuts down or restarts the device afterwards, a one-minute countdown shows first. Press Stay on to keep it on.
- Run again in the banner starts the run over once it has ended.
Working offline
A station that has been set up before works without a network. Everything you do is saved on the stick and sent to the server when the station is online again.
- The status bar at the bottom shows how many results are waiting, for example 3 waiting to sync.
- Click it to see what is waiting (wipe records, test results, grades and outcomes). Sync now, or
Ctrl+Shift+S, sends them at once. - If some records keep failing to send, the station sets them aside and says so, for example 3 failed to sync. Click Retry to send them again.
- When you submit a report offline, the station says Report saved, partly synced. The rest goes when it is online.
- Offline, the station uses the workflow it last received.
Get the station online before you rewrite or lose a stick
Results that haven't synced exist only on that stick. Connect the station to the network and let it sync first.
What the admin sees
- Live lists the devices being processed right now (admins see every device; a technician sees the ones they have worked on): make and model, serial number, hardware, technician and status. It updates as the station works. The Live Drives tab shows the drives.
- On Live you can select devices and start their diagnostics from the dashboard.
- Devices holds every processed device. Its page shows each test with its state, the wipes, the grade and the outcome.
- An admin can change a device's outcome on its page with Change outcome. A reason is required, and the page shows who changed it.
